Chapter Twenty-One

Ava/Silver

Slowly, I lower my face into the darkness and as I do an icy draught, rushes up from the black space below me. It hits my face with such an abrupt blow it sends me recoiling upwards.

“Shit!” I curse.

I grit my teeth and lower myself back towards it, determined to maintain some semblance of courage. This is my chance. My opportunity to escape. It’s in my reach. I can sense it. Trouble is, I can’t see it. I can’t see what lies beneath me. Digging my fingernails into the wooden base of the drawer, I lower my head even further into the empty void, but there is nothing to guide me. No promise of light ahead. I can’t even tell if there is a reachable surface for which I could stand, crawl, or walk down if I were to dare venture into it.

Heavy, stumbling footsteps pound outside my new prison, followed by the shattering sound of glass smashing into a wall. Two unnerving reminders that immediately force me to make a quick risk assessment: between the danger outside this drawer, and the unforeseeable darkness below.

It takes seconds to decide there is no contest between the two.

I take a deep breath and then reach my right arm down into the black void. The air feels damp and my hand shakes as I search for something to grab onto. There has to be something down here. I know there is. I can feel it in my bones. Xander wanted me to discover this secret. He must have.

It is in the darkest moments that we have to let hope prevail. Only then can we see the light.

I have no idea where this thought comes from, but it fills my mind, urging me to take a leap of faith. To dig deeper into myself and find the courage to trust my instincts; to believe that I deserve better than this. That I deserve to survive.

I wriggle my fingers, desperately feeling for something, anything to touch. When nothing transpires, I edge myself further downwards, stretching out my left arm into the space. I have to clench my stomach muscles into the base of the drawer to prevent my fall and within seconds my entire body starts to shake. Xander was right, I’m too weak to defend myself. I should have eaten those stupid sweets when he gave them to me. He knew I had an arduous journey ahead of me.

“Xander,” I whisper into the darkness. An absurd idea has just popped into my head: that he’s down here waiting for me. That, maybe, just maybe, this was all part of his plan. There’s bound to be another route to get to whatever this underground space is. Perhaps he shoved me in here at the last minute when he heard his brothers and he’s coming back for me via a secret tunnel?

“So,
